Depth and Turnovers Sink Ex Prep Lions in Season’s First Loss, Fall 34-6
Charleston, WV – The Ex Prep Lions’ undefeated start to the season came to a grinding halt on Saturday as they fell 34-6 to the UC Eagles on a hot September afternoon, with depth and second-half dominance proving the difference.
Facing a traditionally strong Division II program, the Lions struggled to maintain momentum in the heat, ultimately collapsing under the pressure of a deep UC roster that wore down Ex Prep’s players.
The Lions started the contest with vigor, successfully executing their opening drive to jump out to an early 6-0 lead. The scoring sequence featured an important 25-yard reception by receiver Zayden Ward, setting up the offense deep in enemy territory. Quarterback Ty Stephens then finished the drive with a 1-yard plunge into the end zone.
However, the missed extra point kept the score at 6-0.
Ex Prep’s defense held strong for most of the first half, but the Eagles managed to punch in an equalizer touchdown late in the second quarter. When the ensuing two-point conversion attempt failed, the teams headed into halftime tied at 6-6, setting the stage for what promised to be a tense defensive battle.
The second half, however, belonged entirely to the Eagles. UC’s overwhelming roster size—reportedly featuring 65 players—allowed them to cycle fresh athletes onto the field throughout the punishing heat, exploiting the fatigue of the Lions.
UC took control using a strong second-half running game, coupled with two costly turnovers committed by the Ex Prep offense. The Eagles’ relentless attack put up 28 unanswered points, securing the commanding 34-6 victory.
Lions Head Coach Adam Hill acknowledged that the final score reflected the significant gulf in size and depth between the two programs.
"They are traditionally a very good Division II program," Hill stated after the game. "I knew depth could be an issue for us if we couldn't put some drives together and also get off the field on defense."
Hill spoke highly of the Charleston program and tradition they've built recently.
"UC is a good team and it shows in their depth," he added. "To have 65 JV players is a testament to their recent success on the field and in recruiting."
The Lions will look to regroup next week as they travel to Division III Marietta College after suffering their first setback of the season.
